Cookie Policy

We use cookies to make Profio work, remember your preferences, and understand how you use our Service. Here is everything you need to know about the cookies we use and how to control them.

Last updated: February 15, 2026

What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files that websites place on your device (computer, tablet, or phone) when you visit them. They are widely used to make websites work more efficiently, provide a better user experience, and give website owners useful information about how their site is being used.

We also use similar technologies such as local storage and session storage, which serve similar purposes. When we refer to "cookies" in this policy, we include all of these technologies.

FingerprintJS - Device Identification
Understanding how we use device fingerprinting for security

What is Device Fingerprinting?

Device fingerprinting is a technique that collects information about your device's configuration (such as browser type, operating system, screen resolution, and installed fonts) to create a unique identifier. Unlike cookies, this identifier cannot be easily deleted or cleared by users. We use FingerprintJS, a privacy-focused fingerprinting service, to help prevent fraud and protect your account.

What Data Do We Collect?

FingerprintJS collects the following device characteristics, which are hashed and anonymized:

  • Browser type, version, and user agent
  • Operating system and device type
  • Screen resolution and color depth
  • Timezone and language settings
  • Installed fonts and plugins (hashed)
  • Canvas and WebGL fingerprints (hashed)

Why Do We Use It?

We use device fingerprinting for the following security purposes:

  • Fraud prevention: Detecting suspicious login attempts from unusual devices
  • Account security: Identifying account takeover attempts
  • Bot detection: Preventing automated abuse of our Service
  • Rate limiting: Enforcing fair usage policies across users

Data Privacy & Retention

All fingerprint data is hashed using one-way cryptographic algorithms, making it impossible to reverse-engineer your device characteristics. We retain fingerprint identifiers for 90 days to maintain security effectiveness. FingerprintJS is GDPR and CCPA compliant and does not sell your data to third parties.

How to Opt Out

You can opt out of device fingerprinting in your Account Settings → Privacy → Fraud Prevention. Note that opting out may reduce the security of your account and may trigger additional verification steps (such as email verification) for login attempts from new devices.

Your Control

Managing Cookies in Your Browser

Most browsers allow you to view, manage, and delete cookies. Here is how to manage cookies in the most popular browsers. Note that blocking all cookies may impact your experience on Profio.

Google Chrome

Settings > Privacy and security > Cookies and other site data. Choose your preferred setting or block specific cookies.

Mozilla Firefox

Settings > Privacy & Security > Cookies and Site Data. Use Standard, Strict, or Custom protection levels.

Apple Safari

Preferences > Privacy > Manage Website Data. Enable "Prevent cross-site tracking" for enhanced privacy.

Microsoft Edge

Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Cookies and site permissions. Choose Basic, Balanced, or Strict tracking prevention.

Similar Technologies - Beyond Cookies

In addition to cookies, we use similar browser storage technologies to enhance your experience. These work alongside cookies but serve different purposes:

LocalStorage

Stores data persistently on your device with no expiration. We use LocalStorage to save resume drafts (so you never lose your work), user preferences (such as editor layout and collapsed sidebar state), and theme settings. Data remains until you clear your browser data or we explicitly delete it.

SessionStorage

Stores temporary data that expires when you close your browser tab. We use SessionStorage for temporary form state (such as multi-step wizard progress), flash messages (such as success/error notifications), and navigation history within a session. This data is never sent to our servers.

IndexedDB

A client-side database for storing larger amounts of structured data. We use IndexedDB to enable offline editing of resumes (your changes are saved locally and synced when you reconnect), cache resume templates for faster loading, and store AI optimization suggestions for review. You can clear IndexedDB data through your browser's developer tools.

Privacy Note: All data stored in LocalStorage, SessionStorage, and IndexedDB remains on your device and is never automatically transmitted to our servers. We only sync this data when you explicitly save changes or when using features like "Sync Across Devices."

Third-Party Cookies

Some cookies on our site are placed by third-party services that appear on our pages. We do not control the setting of these cookies. You can check the third-party websites for more information about their cookies and how to manage them. We carefully select our third-party partners and require them to comply with applicable privacy laws.

Do Not Track (DNT) Support

Some browsers offer a "Do Not Track" (DNT) feature that sends a signal to websites you visit indicating that you do not want to be tracked. Unlike many websites that ignore DNT signals, Profio respects your privacy preferences.

What Happens When DNT is Enabled

  • Analytics cookies are automatically disabled (no Google Analytics, no PostHog tracking)
  • Marketing cookies are blocked (no Facebook Pixel, no Google Ads)
  • FingerprintJS device identification is disabled (unless required for fraud prevention on login)
  • Essential cookies remain active (required for the Service to function)

How to Enable DNT

To enable Do Not Track in your browser:

  • Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Send a "Do not track" request
  • Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Enable "Tell websites not to sell or share my data"
  • Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Enable "Prevent cross-site tracking"

Global Privacy Control (GPC): We also support the Global Privacy Control signal, which is a more comprehensive privacy standard than DNT. When GPC is enabled, we apply the same restrictions as DNT plus automatically opt you out of data sales (if applicable under CCPA).

Updates to This Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the cookies we use or for other operational, legal, or regulatory reasons. We will notify you of material changes by posting a notice on our website. We recommend checking this page periodically for the latest information on our cookie practices.
